The underlying charm of the Philippines is its chain of 7,107 islands. The main island groups are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the South China Sea to the west, the Bashi Channel to the north, and the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea to the south, the Philippines has a total land area of 300,780 sq kms, with a coastline of 15,500 kms that is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

The Philippines is the third-largest English-speaking country in the world, and has a rich history combining Asian, European and American influences. Prior to Spanish colonisation in 1521, the Filipinos had a rich culture of their own, and traded regularly with China and Japan.

From its northernmost tip to its farthest island in the south, the Philippines is an unmistakably beautiful country endowed with pristine beaches, bountiful lakes and serene lagoons, magnificent mountains and challenging volcanoes, pastoral countryside, and highly developed cities and urban centres. Most of all, it is home to a fascinatingly captivating people given to smiles and renowned for their hospitality.

Manila, the main entry point to the country and its capital city, is a cosmopolitan and bustling metropolis that boasts luxury hotels, upscale shopping centres and entertainment venues that become particularly stirring at night, as well as centres for arts and crafts, museums, historical landmarks and centuries-old churches.

Filipinos are fun-loving people. Throughout the islands, fiestas are celebrated every day and foreign guests are always welcome in local residents’ homes. Filipinos are also a freedom-loving people, having waged two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were perceived as corrupt regimes.

The country is marked by a true blend of cultures. Truly in the Philippines, East meets West. The background of the Filipino people is Indonesian and Malay, with some Chinese and Spanish elements as well. The history of American rule, and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of the Orient and the Occident, in both the appearance and the culture of the Filipinos.

The Philippines is easily accessible by air as most of the world’s major airlines serve the international airports located in Manila.
